Understanding Graves’ Disease in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, Graves’ disease is caused due to an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly an aggravated state of the Vata dosha. This condition is thought to be associated with poor dietary habits, excessive stress, and irregular lifestyle, which can disrupt the natural harmony of the body.

Treatment and Management

Medications like anti-thyroid therapy and radioactive iodine are commonly used to reduce inflammation, slow disease progression, and manage symptoms.

Care offered by SGP’s PSA has been demonstrated to be effective in alleviating symptoms and enhancing the quality of life for patients with Graves’ disease. The primary focus of care delivered by the PSA is to manage symptoms, address emotional and psychological distress, and improve overall comfort.

FAQs about Graves’ Disease

  1. In Graves’ disease, the thyroid gland becomes overactive and produces an excessive amount of thyroid hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This leads to hyperthyroidism, affecting various bodily functions.

  2. Graves’ disease most commonly occurs in individuals aged 30 to 50 years, although it can also affect children and elderly adults.

  3. Incorporate vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, and heart-healthy fats (e.g., olive oil) into meals followed by a moderate amount of lean protein (such as turkey, fish, beans, legumes, nut butter, and even soy).

  4. Graves’ disease can cause Graves’ ophthalmopathy, which results in eye problems such as bulging eyes (exophthalmos), eye irritation, double vision, and even vision loss in severe cases.

  5. If left untreated, Graves’ disease can lead to severe health issues, including heart problems, brittle bones (osteoporosis), and, in rare cases, a life-threatening condition known as thyroid storm. A thyroid storm is characterized by extremely high thyroid hormone levels and requires immediate medical attention.
