Alopecia

Introduction

Alopecia areata is a condition that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles, which are the structures in the skin that produce hair. While hair loss can occur from any area of the body, it is more common to experience hair loss in the head and face.

Signs and Symptoms of Alopecia

  • Patches of hair loss in the scalp, face, brows, lash, or body
  • Nail pitting
  • Itching of the patches
  • Change of colour of the patches
  • Black dots on the patches

Causes of Alopecia

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the hair follicle. The immune system attacks the follicle because it perceives the follicle as a foreign invader, such as a bacterium, virus, parasite, or fungus.

Understanding Alopecia in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, alopecia is attributed to an imbalance in the body’s Pitta and Vata doshas. Excess Pitta can lead to inflammation and hair loss, while disrupted Vata, can affect hair follicle health and blood circulation.

Treatment and Management

Alopecia, or hair loss, can be treated through various methods. These include medications to promote hair growth, corticosteroid injections for localized bald spots, and hair transplant surgery for severe cases. Additionally, lifestyle changes such as stress management and a balanced diet can help reduce hair fall.

Care offered by SGP’s PSA has been demonstrated to be effective in alleviating symptoms and enhancing the quality of life for patients with alopecia. The primary focus of care delivered by the PSA is to manage symptoms, address emotional and psychological distress, and improve overall comfort.
