Eczema

Overview

Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, and irritated skin. It commonly begins in childhood but can persist into adulthood. The condition follows a pattern of flare-ups and remission. It is associated with a weakened skin barrier and immune system sensitivity. Persistent itching is a key feature. Scratching can worsen inflammation and damage the skin. Eczema may affect sleep and daily comfort. It often appears on the face, neck, hands, and folds of the skin. Though not contagious, it can be long-lasting. Proper evaluation helps determine severity and management approach.

What Happens During Allergic Rhinitis?

During a flare-up, the skin barrier weakens, allowing moisture loss and irritant entry. This triggers inflammation, redness, and intense itching. Repeated scratching thickens the skin and may cause cracks or oozing. Severe cases may lead to secondary infections.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is clinical and based on medical history and examination. There is no single confirmatory test. Allergy testing may be considered in selected cases.
